Investigation of self-heating and damage progression in woven carbon fibre composite materials, following the fibres direction, under static and cyclic loading

Infrared thermography is commonly used as a non-destructive testing technique for damage monitoring of composite materials under mechanical loadings. Self-heating tests consist in the stabilized heating material submitted to cyclic loading increasing values stress level. It appears that load threshold from which thermal behaviour changes can be related fatigue limit tested material. In this paper, compared woven thermoplastic monotonic tensile test. Indeed, during quasi-static test, temperature cools down, due thermoelastic effect, before warming up again, both viscous effects and first evolutions. The comparison, made warp direction only, also based on microscopic optical scanning specimen edge passive acoustic monitoring. shown detected samples are associated with occurring static loading, similar levels. This result indicates make it possible estimate threshold, therefore potential limit, even faster than self-heating tests, opens very promising prospects determination reinforced by carbon fibre yarns.
